If you sell a house after owning it for less than 365 days, you may be subject to property flipping rules. The profit from property flipping is fully taxable as business income and does not qualify for the 50-per-cent capital gains inclusion rate or the Principal Residence Exemption. The Canada Carbon Rebate (formerly known as the Climate action incentive payment (CAIP)) is a tax-free amount to help eligible individuals and families offset the cost of the federal pollution pricing. It consists of a basic amount and a supplement for residents of small and rural communities. The CCR includes a rural supplement of 10% of the base amount for residents of small and rural communities. Starting in April 2024 for the 2023 base year, the rural supplement will be increased to 20% of the base amount. Note that this increase is pending Royal Assent. If you received COVID-19 benefits in error or later found out you did not meet the eligibility criteria, you must repay the full amount of any payments you received. Tax Season 2023 will be the first reporting year for holders of a First Home Savings Account (FHSA). Similar to a RRSP, FHSA holders receive a deduction from their taxable income for contributions made throughout the year. Similar to a TFSA, account holders can then take advantage of a tax-free withdrawal if using the funds to purchase their first home. As of January 1, 2024, payments or remittances to the Receiver General of Canada over $10K should be made electronically. The option to send payments by cheque will remain available to taxpayers for the foreseeable future. Before applying a penalty, the CRA will be educating taxpayers about the easy, secure, and convenient electronic payments options currently available to make payments to the CRA. A Health and Safety Representative (HSR) is required in most workplaces with six to 19 workers. Their role is to support health and safety in the workplace. Eligible small business employers can apply to be reimbursed for the HSR's training cost through the Ontario Small Business Health and Safety Training program. This program will be ending March 31, 2024. Employers who want to claim training costs must ensure HSR employees complete training and obtain a certificate of completion by 5:00 p.m. on March 31. The Veterinary Incentive Program is a new funding program in Ontario that aims to encourage newly licensed veterinarians who practice on food animals to work in underserviced areas, including northern communities. The grant is also available for licensed veterinarians who are relocating to a clinic in an underserviced area. Grant funds may total up to $50,000 per person, and the program will run for nine years, with grant payments made over a five-year period. Applications are being accepted on a continuous basis until March 31, 2027. Specific eligibility requirements must be met in order to be considered as an applicant. After hearing suggestions from staff, we hosted our very first chili-cook off last week. Seven staff members faced off, putting their best chili forward. Remaining staff had the opportunity to pay a small amount to sample all 7 chilis and vote for their favourite. The WSIB has made changes to accident reporting timelines and the determination of average earnings for apprentices. Businesses must now notify the WSIB of an accident within three business days of learning of their reporting obligation. Previously, the policies indicated that the WSIB must receive a business’s accident report within seven business days. With respect to apprentices’ average earnings, Bill 46, Less Red Tape, Stronger Ontario Act, 2023 amended the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, 1997 to specify that an apprentice’s average earnings are to be an amount equal to the average earnings of a journeyperson in the same trade as the apprentice. The changes are reflected in Operational Policy Manual 18-02-08 (Determining Average Earnings – Exceptional Cases). Wondering how this affects you? The long-awaited obstacle course challenge was run last Thursday. There were winners, there were losers, but the biggest win was the community, our staff and clients coming together to support @unitedwayph. Besnik Sulemanovski was the "winner" of our fundraising campaign, followed by Luke MacLennan, and a tie between Jennifer McArthur and Jon Soltys. As the winner, Besnik had to cheer on the first heat in costume 🐄. Girl power prevailed, with Jen winning the final, thanks to some quick puzzle arranging (IYKYK). A reminder to employers that on October 1, 2023, the Ontario government increased the general provincial minimum wage from $15.50 to $16.55 per hour. This minimum wage applies to most employees. Minimum wage rates also increased yesterday for the following groups of employees: • students under age 18 (if the student’s weekly hours do not exceed 28 hours or if the student is employed during a school holiday): from $14.60 to $15.60 an hour • homeworkers: from $17.05 to $18.20 an hour • hunting, fishing and wilderness guides: from $77.60 to $82.85 per day to $155.25 to $165.75 per day depending on the number of hours worked Questions on how this affects you as an employer? Back in June, CIBC and W&U faced off in a friendly golf challenge. The losing team would have to host a charity barbeque at the winning team’s office location. Each office had two teams of two and the combined scores of the two teams would determine the winner. In the opening 9 holes, W&U came out hot and built a strong lead, coasting on the back 9 to victory. To fulfill their end of the bet, CIBC will be hosting a charity barbeque in the W&U parking lot on Friday, September 29 with all proceeds going to the Salvation Army Foodbank. The Agricultural Stewardship Initiative (ASI), provides cost-share funding to support farmers to accelerate the adoption of best management practices (BMPs) supporting soil health, water quality and productivity benefits on agricultural land across Ontario. The Initiative also provides enhanced funding on a regional basis for projects contributing to phosphorus reductions in the Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair watershed areas. Last week, staff were finally able to enjoy a previously rain-delayed and long-awaited golf tournament. The LeGault Cup was claimed by Team Fletcher, ending Team Babstock’s 2 year reign. The Hak Open, with 9 holes to play, was won by Team Par-Tee. We were thrilled to have both retired Partners Dave LeGault and Paul Hak in attendance this year. These tournaments have become annual events, created and organized by staff members, for staff members.
