Ward & Uptigrove had another great time at the United Way's Coldest Night of the Year this past Saturday!
Each year in February, tens of thousands of Canadians step outside the warmth and comfort of home to shine a light of welcome and compassion in their communities.
Since 2011, the Coldest Night of the Year has raised over $75,000,000 across Canada in 190 Canadian communities – 100% of net proceeds stay local to support our CNOY charity partners.
Thanks to everyone that participated to support this great cause!
In an effort to make registration easier, CRA has implemented an immediate identity verification option. A photo of your Canadian passport, driver’s license or provincial/territorial photo ID card can be used. Taxpayers not wishing to use this service can still verify their identity by receiving a security code through the mail.
New options have been added to MyAccount, taxpayers can now make an online request to:
• Transfer available payments or installments within their own account
• Request a refund of available payments or installments
• Request payment tracing
• Request a statement of account

The Federal government intends to amend the Income Tax Act to extend the deadline for making donations eligible for tax claim in the 2024 tax year, until February 28, 2025.
This extension will help offset the effects of the four-week Canada Post mail stoppage by giving donors enough time to ensure their contributions are received and processed, enabling charities to continue delivering essential services to the communities that rely on them.

Employers are no longer permitted to require an employee to provide a sick note from a qualified health practitioner for any ESA (statutory) sick leave. However, an employer may request reasonable evidence in a circumstance where an employee is entitled to the leave.
If an employee exceeds the ESA sick leave entitlements, it is reasonable to assume a note from a qualified health practitioner can be requested/required.
The above would not be applicable when an employer is exercising its duty to accommodate and in developing accommodation plans.

HR can be incredibly complex, so we’re hosting a free Lunch n’ Learn session where we break down 3 common workplace topics:
• Employee medical leave
• Employment agreements

On April 5, 2024, an unprecedented fine was levied towards a corporation and its director for violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The corporation was fined $600,000 and the director was fined $80,000, plus a 25% victim surcharge.
These are highest fines levied both towards a corporation, and to an individual for a single charge in Canadian history, and is further evidence that governing bodies are serious about enforcing legislation to protect workers and prevent further fatalities and injuries.

NEW: For GST/HST reporting periods that begin in 2024, all GST/HST registrants, except for charities and selected financial institutions, are required to file returns electronically.
The mandatory electronic filing threshold that was in place for GST/HST returns has been removed for reporting periods that begin on or after January 1, 2024, which means that electronic filing is now required for most businesses.
Registrants who are required to file their GST/HST returns electronically and don’t are subject to penalties. More information can be found through the link in our bio.
Health & Safety considerations for the total solar eclipse:
On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, briefly turning day into darkness. Depending on where you’re located in Ontario, the eclipse will be visible between 2 and 4 p.m.
Ensure any outdoor workers are informed of the danger and don’t look directly at the sun during the eclipse. You may also consider suspending or modifying work during this period as the eclipse will result in a period of temporary darkness.
To safely view the eclipse, use specialized eye protection that meets ISO 12312-2 standard. Don’t use regular sunglasses. Specialized protection is 1,000 times darker than ordinary sunglass lenses.
If viewing the eclipse through a camera, telescope, or binoculars, use special filters designed for solar viewing.
For any Health & Safety questions, contact our Human Resources Solutions team.
For those affected by the introduction of the new Bare Trust reporting requirements, on March 28, 2024, the government cancelled this filing requirement for the 2023 year, the last business day before the filing deadline.
Please also note that:
🟢 The government has not confirmed whether the Bare Trust filing is gone for good – at this point it has only been cancelled for the 2023 filing year. CRA will be working with the Department of Finance to further clarify its guidance on this filing requirement, and the CRA will provide updates as further information becomes available..
Please contact your Accountant with any questions you may have.

On March 21, 2024, Ontario passed the fourth Working for Workers Act ("Bill 149"). Bill 149 amends the Employment Standards Act, 2000 (“ESA”) and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (“WSIB”) benefits under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, 1997 (“WSIA”).
Effective immediately, Bill 149 amended the ESA to clarify that:
🟢 Any person performing work in a trial period is an employee for the purpose of the ESA.
🟢 An employer cannot deduct an employee's wages in the event of a dine and dash or gas and dash, or in the event of any other stolen property.
On June 21, 2024, the following amendments to the ESA will take effect:
🟢 If an employer has a policy regarding pooling tips – meaning the employer or a director or shareholder of the employer shares in the tip pool – that policy must be posted in the workplace and retained for three years after it ceases to be in effect.
🟢 An employer who pays an employee their tips by direct deposit must allow the employee to select into which account they want this money deposited.
🟢 An employer who pays an employee by cash or cheque must ensure the cash or cheque is given to the employee at their workplace or some other place agreeable to the employee.
🟢 A change in the language of the vacation pay provisions to clarify that a written agreement is required if an employer pays vacation pay in any way other than a lump sum. For example, many employers pay out vacation pay as a percentage on each pay cheque. This practice requires a written agreement with the employee.
Does this raise more questions than it answers? Our HR Solutions team is ready to help. Contact us any time with your HR and H&S concerns.

Thanks to our staff who volunteered with the Salvation Army Foodbank the week before the holidays. They worked putting holiday meal ingredients together for local families who would otherwise not have a special dinner to share. We're grateful to have such enthusiastic and caring people on our team.
